ALPACA FIBER CHARACTERISTICS

The most important processing characteristics of alpaca fiber are:

Fineness, uniformity of micron and color, tensile strength, staple length and lack of excessive medullation (guard hair).

These characteristics may be manipulated by husbandry, breeding, nutrition, and pasture/barn management procedures. It is important to have a consistent nutritional program for the alpaca during the growing period to ensure uniformity of fiber growth, in terms of staple length, tensile strength, and fineness.
