What is micron count and how does it affect my investment in the cooperative?
Micron count is electron microscope measure of the average diameter of individual fibers in a sample of fiber from one spot on the alpaca. It is a measure of the fineness of the fiber. The trained sorters at the warehouse use their eyes and fingers to sort the thousands of fleeces they receive into fineness grades. They are able to assess the fineness of an entire fleece very quickly. This type of sorting process is done with wool, cashmere, mohair and other types of animal fibers. The fineness grade of a fleece will affect the final dividend disbursement to the member as finer fleeces have higher value than coarser fleeces.
