In the simplest of terms, a Cooperative is a business partnership.  It is about people working together to advance their common interests.  Cooperatives are owned by their shareholders, who provide the capital necessary to sustain the business.  Unlike traditional corporations, cooperative's return income to shareholders in proportion to their participation in cooperative activities, and each shareholder is limited to a single share of common stock and a single vote.
